ACUPUNCTURE FOR
sports injuries

Whether you are a professional athlete, a keen runner, or a weekend golfer there is nothing more frustrating than when you cannot compete or do the sport you love.  And you want to find a treatment that will get you back up and running (excuse the pun) as quickly as possible?

You may have already seen the circular marks on swimmers backs?  Or the athletes with photos of needles in their legs?  It is because Chinese medicine, and acupuncture, is also borrowed by osteopaths, physiotherapists and sports masseurs because it WORKS and gets their patients training again.

Acupuncture for sports injuries: the evidence

Don't just take the word (or picture) of The Rock or David Beckham or Michael Phelps, that acupuncture helps them compete and train.  Here are is some evidence that acupuncture works:

In a systematic review in 2020, they reviewed twenty-two studies of sports injuries ranging from:

  • sub-acute left elbow tendinopathy

  • exercise-induced fatigue

  • anterior/ anterolateral shoulder pain

  • amenorrhea

In each of those twenty-two studies they found that acupuncture (and sometimes alongside other treatment modalities) was successful in improving or alleviating symptoms.  For further details of the injuries please see the visuals below.
